The law in the UK does not currently permit an electric scooter to be used on public roads, paths or land. Electric scooters may only be on private land and with the landowner's permission.
The UK government is currently undergoing trials in 40 cities across the country including London, Nottingham, Newcastle, Birmingham & Liverpool. The trials are designed to test public demand for scooters as a mode of transport as the UK government decides whether to legalise their use in public areas.
Recent research which polled 2,000 UK adults showed that if electric scooters were made legal to ride on public roads, 33% of respondents said they would consider using one for a shorter journey and 28% would consider swapping their car for an e-scooter to ‘benefit the environment.’ (Source: Halfords/YouGov, November 2019).
